Kindly note that an average between every 100 years is given for all major epidemic diseases. Please see the description for accurate years and check the link from Wikipedia for sources
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_epidemics

1720-The Great Plague of Marseille
The disease arrived on a merchant ship called the Grand Saint Antoine at French port city of Marseille. It carried infected passengers from Middle East and unloaded its cargo which contained rat fleas. Plague-carrying rat fleas soon spread across the city, sparking an epidemic. Plague walls” were even built to try to and contain the infection, but it still spilled over into southern France before finally disappearing in 1722. By then, it had killed roughly 100,000 people.

1817-1824 (Cholera)- average (1820)
The first cholera pandemic 1820 also known as the first Asiatic cholera pandemic or Asiatic cholera, began near the city of Calcutta (India) stemming from contaminated rice and spread throughout Southeast Asia to the Middle East, eastern Africa and the Mediterranean coast. Cholera highest death rate was in Thailand, Indonesia (killing 100,000 people on the island of Java alone) and the Philippines.

1918-1919 (Spanish Flu)- average (1920)
France was the epic centre of Spanish flu. It first originated in a hospital, overcrowded camp which was an ideal site for the spreading of a respiratory virus. The hospital treated thousands of victims of chemical attacks, and other casualties of war, and 100,000 soldiers passed through the camp every day. It also was home to a piggery, and poultry was regularly brought in for food supplies from surrounding villages. Significant precursor virus, harbored in birds, mutated and then migrated to pigs kept near the front. The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 50 million to100 million, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history

MUFC v Crystal Palace August 2019

injuries No Comments »

“Ole’s on a knife-edge”

Two weeks ago, Manchester United spectacularly launched their season with a 4-0 drubbing of an abject Chelsea side and everything in the garden looked rosy.

Today saw the old United, dire in defence on virtually the only two occasions Crystal Palace came forward and wasteful once again upfront as they chased a game they were expected to win at a canter.

Having eventually hauled themselves back on level terms with time almost up, there would surely be only one winner as the contest entered five added on minutes. But as the Reds searched for that elusive winner, it was the Eagles who pounced as David De Gea allowed a Patrick van Aanholt shot to creep under his body, ending another bad afternoon for the increasingly-under – pressure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The single point they had fought for almost an hour to rescue will have left his side shell- shocked as both this game and the draw at Wolves should have seen United vying for the top spot in the Premiership. Instead, a missed penalty by Marcus Rashford whose effort rebounded off the woodwork plus other opportunities that went begging and a calamitous first half goal conceded when Victor Lindelof lost an aerial battle allowing Jordan Ayew to run on and score gave Palace a victory they could only have dreamed of.

Refereeing decisions and the VAR system not being used when it should have been may have added to their woes, but the goal-shy South London side should have been meat and drink on an afternoon when everything that could have gone wrong probably did. Injuries to Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial will not have helped the cause and some careful planning needs to be put in place ahead of a tricky trip to Southampton next weekend.

On a day when only Dan James’ late equaliser caused a fleeting moment of joy, United look just a work in progress band nothing else.

Regards Lew
